In a career spanning nearly 40 years, Antony Gormley has made sculpture that explores the relation of the human body to space at large, explicitly in large-scale installations like ANOTHER PLACE, DOMAIN FIELD and INSIDE AUSTRALIA and implicitly in works such as CLEARING, BREATHING ROOM and BLIND LIGHT, where the work becomes a frame through which the viewer becomes the viewed. By using his own existence as a test ground, Gormley's work transforms a site of subjective experience into one of collective projection.

I discovered the work from this british architect the other day in the www listed as one of the 10 richest artists in the world. What I like the most from his work is his plastic approach to the human figure. In an era of digital art and virtual reality, it gives back our conciousness in a material world and the relevance of our individuality uniqueness as a species in this planet earth.

The Cement Factory was discovered in 1973, it was an abandoned cement factory and partially in ruins, comprised of over 30 silos, underground galleries and huge engine rooms; Ricardo Bofill bought it and began renovation works. He identified the program; The Cement Factory was to be used as architectural offices, archives, a model laboratory, and exhibition space, an apartment for him, as well as guest rooms and gardens. He defined the space by demolishing certain structures, cleaning cement, exposing previously concealed structures and creating the landscape architecture by planting various plants such as eucalyptus, palms, olive trees and cypresses; renovation works lasted nearly two years.

This instalation: Sataircase III, is set up at the TATE Modern of London and respresents a staircase in the artist apartment in New York. It forms part from a series of pieces that talks about his personal memories of architectural spaces. "My work starts from refelction on space, specailly personal space".

"... I am interestected not only in the physical space also the intangible, metaphorical and psycological, space is for me the one which encompasses everything. This is hightligted with the idea of a space in between 2 spaces in which circunstances the viewer imagine where does it come from and where does it take us this stair.

This work was originally exhibited at the Instanbul Bienneale 2003, that is why the colour of the textile is red.

New UAL Campus for Central Saint Martins

Central Saint Martins has moved to King Cross to a new imponet building that unites all the disciplines Arts, Fashion, Design in one unique space. Compared to the previous campus where I studied looks amazingand it is quite impresive the scale of the building. Half of the set of images that I have posted I took them when I went to see the WIP show from MAID students. Sadly ex students and alumni are not allowed to get into the building so I could just take images of the main street where the works of the students where exhibited, the interior images are publishedin Stanton Williams website.

This tower is a master piece of the architecture from the UK. I discovered it 2 weeks ago on my way to have lunch at Portobello Road. It is an impresive building that reminds me the SESC from Lina Bo Bardi in Sao Paulo.

Trellick Tower is a 31-storey block of flats in North Kensington, London, England. It was designed in the Brutalist style by architect Ernő Goldfinger, after a commission from the Greater London Council in 1966, and completed in 1972. It is a Grade II listed building and is 98 metres (322 ft) tall (120 metres (394 ft) including the communications mast).

Goldfinger’s design is based on his earlier and slightly smaller Balfron Tower (in Poplar, east London), and is in effect a sister building. It is also similar to Anniesland Court in Glasgow, design by J. Holmes & Partners and completed in 1968. It has a long, thin profile, with a separate lift and service tower linked at every third storey to the access corridors in the main building; flats above and below the corridor levels have internal stairs. The building contains 217 flats. Shortly after its completion the building was transferred to the local council (the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea). Most of the flats are still social housing, but a significant minority are now privately owned.

His works are noted for their psychological penetration, and for their often discomfiting examination of the relationship between artist and model.

It was Freud's practice to begin a painting by first drawing in charcoal on the canvas. He then applied paint to a small area of the canvas, and gradually worked outward from that point. For a new sitter, he often started with the head as a means of "getting to know" the person, then painted the rest of the figure, eventually returning to the head as his comprehension of the model deepened.

Ai Weiwei’s work, Forever Bicycles, installs 1,200 bicycles--some hanging from the ceiling, some standing upright on the floor--one behind the other. Curvaceous - Limburg curved asparagus

Nowadays we just see perfect vegetables on the market because the imperfect ones stay in the farm, although taste and quality are the same in both cases. The “de Poshoof” family farm just set up a Bed & Breakfast so they can give the delicious but “imperfect” curved asparagus to their guest inside a cozy and home-made package to have a snack during their visits around Maastricht; a package that the guests receive as a business present from the “de Poshoof” farm to be used afterward in their daily life as often as they want since it can be cleaned in the washing machine. By transferring the shape of the harvesting land into the package, the curved asparagus become more sculptural when they are faced to the straight lines and surfaces of the wrapping, a wrapping made out of two sewn layers -a polypropylene plastic foil as a dish and an organic cotton fabric as a napkin- to help people to re-discover again what nature really produces.

This project is to explore the meaning and implications of shadow in terms of how it can be used as an intangible.
How can I make something intangible become tangible?
Find ways of using shadow without the use of digital. Look for something in daily life; how can people use or benefit from shadows in their daily lives? Create a scenario to help design for the user experience. Create a functional product that can be used and is fully tangible.

To design a product with both form and function, which has been generated with reference to an image created by shadow. I will investigate the way in which the image of a shadow is formed, and then develop a real product based on the captured image.

I aim to make the viewer curious about nature and how the product becomes complete with the addition of shadow. The result will be an object that looks incomplete without shadow, but the shadow will form part of the product in a way that makes it complete and usable. To define the conclusion of my design, I will use information gained from research to analyse the objects, and create different types of products.

Last summer my dear friend Mafalda and her boyfriend went with a bunch of friends to the Burning Man in Nevada. After seeing the pictures you can imagine that this is something once in a lifetime and I am thinking seriously about going this year.

Burning Man is a week-long annual event held in the Black Rock Desert in northern Nevada, in the United States. The event starts on the Monday before the American Labor Day holiday, and ends on the holiday itself. It takes its name from the ritual burning of a large wooden effigy on Saturday evening. The event is described by many participants as an experiment in community, radical self-expression, and radical self-reliance.

Our mission is to produce the annual event known as "Burning Man" and to guide, nurture and protect the more permanent community created by its culture. Our intention is to generate society that connects each individual to his or her creative powers, to participation in community, to the larger realm of civic life, and to the even greater world of nature that exists beyond society. We believe that the experience of Burning Man can produce positive spiritual change in the world. To this end, it is equally important that we communicate with one another, with the citizens of Black Rock City and with the community of Burning Man wherever it may arise. Burning Man is radically inclusive, and its meaning is potentially accessible to anyone. London is a lot of things: chaotic, grey, dirty, poluted... the city that gave birth to the vintage trend it is facing in 2012 to be the capital of the word with the Olympics games. Some people like me believe that the city will not be able to absorve and deal with the extra million of people that will visit the capital of UK... moreover with the still recent riots London is ready to be a model of public-spiritedness to the world?

This is not a compilation of familiar tourist sights, as another of those is hardly needed, but a depiction of an (often un-picturesque) view of everyday life in London

This site is obviously not taken to illustrate London at its most beautiful or most successful, the name derelict London is a memorable name for a website though not everything within this site is of derelict areas and everyone has their own definition of derelict......99% of these pictures were taken by myself during many miles of walkabouts around the great capital. After years of travelling via car or public transport I realised just how littleI had seen of London. (ie just stepping back and looking at buildings and people). I've enjoyed putting this site together and will continue to add more pics. Try not to be too critical because I'm no professional photographer. Neither is this some trendy art student project..............Any places you think should be on this site? Let me know! Also info (however trivial) or stories/personal memories on any of the buildings would be appreciated.

The Luís I Bridge (Ponte Luís I) is a metal arch bridge that spans the Douro River between the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia in Portugal. At the time of construction its span of 172 m was the longest of its type in the world.

The Government held a competition for the construction of a metallic bridge over the Douro River on a site that was adjacent to an existing bridge and would replace it. Téophile Seyrig had already engineered the D. Maria Pia Bridge project nearby, whilst working as a partner of Eiffel. He now took sole responsibility for the new, major Luís 1st Bridge. The construction was begun in 1881 and the bridge opened on 31 October 1886.

The idea for “Swimming Pool” by Leandro Erlich was first conceived in 1998 while the artist was in residence in Houston as part of the Core program. Since then, it was featured at the Venice Biennale and has found a home as part of the permanent collection at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, Japan.

Erlich has constructed a full-size pool, complete with all its trappings, including a deck and a ladder. When approached from the first floor, visitors are confronted with a surreal scene: people, fully clothed, can be seen standing, walking, and breathing beneath the surface of the water.

Robots of Brixton is an architectural film project that explores the relationship between architecture, class and race. Using Brixton, (or an augmented Brixton) as backdrop, the project uses robots as metaphors for a future intake of migrants to the UK. It acts as a commentary on the cyclical nature of the working class in areas with diverse populations such as Brixton

The projects shows Brixton as a degenerated and disregarded area inhabited by London's new robot workforce. The robots are built and designed to carry out all of the tasks which humans are no longer inclined to do. The mechanical population of Brixton has rocketed, resulting in unplanned, cheap and quick additions to the skyline.

The film follows the trials and tribulations of young robots surviving at the sharp end of inner city life, living the predictable existence of a populous hemmed in by poverty, disillusionment and mass unemployment. When the Police invade the one space which the robots can call their own, the fierce and strained relationship between the two sides explodes into an outbreak of violence echoing that of 1981.

Architecturally Robots of Brixton has three main design strands.

1. Urbanism and Masterplanning. Do design the film I first had to readapt an interoperate the architecture of Brixton. Social housing, Markets, Public buildings and spaces were all researched and redesigned at urban scale.
2. Film Design. The film in itself was a complex design project, all the environments, set design, transitions between films scenes all had to fit together harmoniously.
3. Robot Design, using 2D and 3D techniques each robot was designed in detail.
Robots of Brixton is a projects that bridges Architecture, and politics using the medium of film as an open and accessible way in. The England riots of 2011 amplify the subject matter as both potent and relevant.

Working as an interior designer one of the most complicated decisions that you have to make is the colour scheme for a project. As an architect I am used to work in blanck & white, but coulour is what it gives personality to a space. It gives the warmth required to make a room habitable. Monochrome images talks about the depht and volume of an space but colour is more related with feelings and perception.

In 1666, English scientist Sir Isaac Newton discovered that when pure white light passes through a prism, it separates into all of the visible colors.

While perceptions of color are somewhat subjective, there are some color effects that have universal meaning. Colors in the red area of the color spectrum are known as warm colors and include red, orange and yellow. These warm colors evoke emotions ranging from feelings of warmth and comfort to feelings of anger and hostility.

Colors on the blue side of the spectrum are known as cool colors and include blue, purple and green. These colors are often described as calm, but can also call to mind feelings of sadness or indifference.

Several ancient cultures, including the Egyptians and Chinese, practiced chromotherapy, or using colors to heal. Chromotherapy is sometimes referred to as light therapy or colourology and is still used today as a holistic or alternative treatment.

Red was used to stimulate the body and mind and to increase circulation.

Yellow was thought to stimulate the nerves and purify the body.

Orange was used to heal the lungs and to increase energy levels.

Blue was believed to soothe illnesses and treat pain.

Indigo shades were thought to alleviate skin problems.

Most psychologists view color therapy with skepticism and point out that the supposed effects of color have been exaggerated. Colors also have different meanings in different cultures. Research has demonstrated in many cases that the mood-altering effects of color may only be temporary. A blue room may initially cause feelings of calm, but the effect dissipates after a short period of time.

As a conclusion there is a lot of presure on choosing the colour for a wall and even more combine it with another. Sometimes you can go crazy but there is this inner responsability as a designer that your choice will have an effect on people. Experience it is crucial and learning from errors give you the correct answer to paint a white canvas.

It is a private house situated en El Ronquillo, Sevilla in the south of Spain. It is a building that shocked me the first time that I saw it published. But now as an "architectural designer" I can see the beauty of the spaces when you zoom in. How clever Mr Ambasz has used the light from Seville, reflecting it into a house that runs underground. It is a Patio Sevillano revised in the XXI century, a space for the contemplation and praisse for nature.

Roberto Burle Marx (August 4, 1909, São Paulo – June 4, 1994, Rio de Janeiro) was a Brazilian landscape architect, whose designs of parks and gardens made him world famous. He is accredited with having introduced modernist landscape architecture to Brazil. He was known as a modern nature artist and a public urban space designer.

He spent a lot of time in the Brazilian forests where he was able to study and explore. This enabled him to add significantly to the botanical sciences, by discovering new rocks and plants for example. At least 30 plants bear his name. Marx was also involved in efforts to protect and conserve the rain forest from the destructive commercial activities of deforestation for bananas and other crops and clear cutting of timber.

Marx’s work “can be summarized in four general design concepts—the use of native tropical vegetation as a structural element of design, the rupture of symmetrical patterns in the conception of open spaces, the colorful treatment of pavements, and the use of free forms in water features”. This approach is exemplified by the Copacabana Beach promenade, where native sea breeze resistant trees and palms appear in groupings along Avenida Atlantica. These groupings punctuate Portugese stone mosaics which form a giant abstract painting where no section along the promenade is the same. This “painting” is viewed from the balconies of hotels, and offers an ever changing view for those driving along the beach. The mosaics continue the entire two and a half mile distance of the beach.

The world is a ball. VP Globe from VerPan, the pendant light of cult designer Verner Panton, embodies his unique Space Age style. A cover of clear plastic gives the look free on chromium-plated and colorfully varnished metal elements which shine from the heart of the ball. vp globe is produced in two sizes, 40 und 50 cm. The smaler one is available in both, acrylic glass and glass.

The Unilever Series: Tacita Dean

FILM is an 11-minute silent 35mm film projected onto a gigantic white monolith standing 13 metres tall at the end of a darkened Turbine Hall. It is the first work in The Unilever Series devoted to the moving image, and celebrates the masterful techniques of analogue film-making as opposed to digital. The work evokes the monumental mysterious black monolith from the classic science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey. The film feels like a surreal visual poem, including images from the natural world among others, with the epic wall of the Turbine Hall showing through, in a montage of black and white, colour, and hand-tinted film.

Tacita Dean is a British artist now based in Berlin, best known for her use of film. Dean’s films act as portraits or depictions rather than conventional cinematic storytelling, capturing fleeting natural light or subtle shifts in movement. Her static camera positions and long takes allow events to unfold unhurriedly. Other works have attempted to reconstruct events from memory, such as an infamous thwarted attempt to circumnavigate the world.

I was susprisely impress by Lady GaGa latest performance at the VMA not becuase she was again over the top singing literaly from the moon (this confirms that she is an "it" an entity from out space) but the costumes that she was wearing in my opinion has been the best outfit that Mr Formichetti has dressed the Mother Monster up. And I was even happier when I discovered that is the comeback, the "Rebirth" of Paco Rabanne into the "Pret a Porter". Manish Arora the new creative director has captured the esence of Paco's style and he has twisted it into a Prada/Valamain/Balenciaga ready to wear. After seeing the show it was obvious that Nichola falled in love with every single piece and convinced GaGa to buy/borrow them for her Haus Archive.

Last week I visited the exhibition that is currently running at the Barbican titled OMA PROGRESS.

When the Barbican invited us to make an exhibition about ourselves, we wanted to use the notoriously "dificult" spaces of the gallery to our advantage. Like an art fair, each room could be an isolated booth, displaying one of the many typologies of OMA's work and preocupatons, from libraries to XL towers to museums to preservation to China to Lagos to energy to museum display techniques.

But after OMA's apotheosis of self-enactment on Content, our last mayor exhibition, at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin eight years ago, we realised that an interpretation by outsiders would be the logical next step. So we decided to surrender control of the exhibiton to Rotor, esperst at dimantilating constructions noth material and rhetorical. In a sense Rotor in the anti-OMA: boderline material feishits, comtemplative types, slow, resistant, consensus-driven, a group of young architects who decided for some reason not to be architects.

We began this project without much acquaitance with the work of OMA. Since they had already been working for months to prepare this exhibition, we felt it best to pick up where they had left off. We embraced the idea of an "exhibition of exhibitions". If OMA is a cake, how to cut into equally interesting pieces? Per region, per period, per notion, per project, per size? After several attempts, we prepared our final proposal and sent 300 pages of explanation on Friday to OMA and barbican for discussion on Monday. On Sunday we had a change of heart and killed the idea. We came up with an alternative that was further removed from OMA usually presents its projects. We called the "exhibition of exhibits". Reiner de Graaf: "isn't that what every exhinition is?" Rotor: "yes. We had proposed a classic: a few hundred items carefully placed within a space".

It's the brainchild of sculptor Richard Wilson, who cut anegg-shaped section out of the derelict building opposite Moorfieldsstation in Liverpool.

As if learning from Gordon Matta-Clark, Wilson sliced an "egg-shaped section" out of the building's facade – "fixing the eight metre diameter piece on a pivot" so it can spin.

Riley made the following comments regarding artistic work, in her lecture Painting Now, 23rd William Townsend Memorial Lecture, Slade School of Art, London, 26 November 1996:

When Samuel Beckett was a young man in the early 1930s, and trying to find a basis from which he could develop, he wrote an essay known as 'Beckett/Proust' (1931), in which he examined Proust's views of creative work; and he quotes Proust's artistic credo as declared in Time Regained – "the task and duty of a writer [not an artist, a writer] are those of a translator". This could also be said of a composer, a painter or anyone practising an artistic métier. An artist is someone with a text which he or she wants to decipher.

Beckett interprets Proust as being convinced that such a text cannot be created or invented but can only be discovered within the artist himself, and that it is, as it were, almost a law of his own nature. It is his most precious possession, and, as Proust explains, the source of his innermost happiness. However, as can be seen from the practice of the great artists, although the text may be strong and durable and able to support a lifetime's work, it cannot be taken for granted and there is no guarantee of permanent possession. It may be mislaid or even lost, and retrieval is very difficult. It may lie dormant, and be discovered late in life after a long struggle, as with Mondrian or Proust himself. Why it should be that some people have this sort of text while others do not, and what 'meaning' it has, is not something which lends itself to argument. Nor is it up to the artist to decide how important it is, or what value it has for other people. To ascertain this is perhaps beyond even the capacities of an artist's own time.
