Charles & RAY EAMES
Charles and Ray Eames are among the most important American designers of this century. They worked succesfully in different projects of architecture, furniture design art and cinema.
Today at the kitchen my parents were talking about them as a good example of how in many years and nowadays the importance of a woman in the world of arts is deliberately eclipsed by a man main figure.
Ray Kaiser Eames was born in Sacramento, California in the middle of the century's second decade. She studied painting with Hans Hofmann in New York before moving on to Cranbrook Academy where she met and assisted Charles and Eero Saarinen in preparing designs for the MoMA's organic furniture competition. Charles and Eero's designs, created by molding plywood into complex curves, won them the two first prizes.

Charles and Ray married in 1941 and moved to California where they continued their furniture design work with molding plywood.
The ambitious manufactrer Herman Miller included furniture by the Eameses, such as the RAR (Rocking Armchair), in its programme. Almost overnight the couple found themselves at the centre of an intellectual circle taht was to redefine American design.
In 1946 the MoMA devoted an especial exhibition to Charles. Ray contribution's was for a long time ignored, as was her artistic carrer.
In the early 1950s, the Eameses extended their interest and skill in photography into filmmaking. They created over 25 short films.
Charles died August 21, 1978. Ray died ten years later to the day. The Eames Office still operates today, run by Charles' daughter, designer Lucia Eames, and one of her sons, Eames Demetrios, releasing their work and creating new objects.
